2013
|
Beginning Monday, May 13, 2013 and continuing until Friday, May 17, 2013, vehicular access to the N. Narberth Avenue bridge will be restricted. The restricted access is required for the "core boring" operation which is part of the preliminary work for the anticipated 2014 bridge reconstruction.
The "core boring" operation consists of a machine that drills an approximately 4"-6" hole into the earth for the purposes of determining bearing soils and depth to bedrock for the foundation of the new bridge. The material is removed and tested by a geotechnical (soil engineer) facility; the engineers take this data and use it to design the foundation of the new structure. The goal is to design the most efficient foundation that limits excavation. This work is part of the required engineering that is part of the effort to bring the new bridge project to construction in 2014. Four borings (two per side) are required for the new bridge foundation and four borings are required for the new catenary support structures being built by Amtrak (two borings per support structure).
The drilling will be completed by TRC Engineers, Inc. which is an experienced PennDOT-qualified drilling contractor. Drilling inspection and analysis will be completed by Dawood Engineering, Inc. who is part of the design team for the project and also is an experienced PennDOT-qualified geotechnical engineering firm.
