Downtown Project Construction Begins

Construction started Monday August 20th by Center Point Tank Removal. Environmental remediation began with removal of 11 underground tanks and 3 above-ground tanks. Tanks were opened, scrubbed and removed intact. Surrounding soil was sampled and tested for contamination. Contaminated soil has been segregated and will be disposed of under the proper methods. Underground tanks removed from the upper parking lot area have been removed and the holes filled with stone and soil.

Phase one of the construction project is on schedule. Tank removal and remediation were completed by Friday, August 31, 2001. The next phase involving removal of the existing retaining wall began October 1, 2001.

Phase two retaining wall demolitions and construction of the upper parking began September 24th. The contractor G. Antonnini Construction Company moved equipment to the construction site on Monday September 17th. Construction is in high gear. Drainage inlets have been installed. The old retaining wall has been removed and a new wall has been poured and is starting to take form New sidewalks and curbs have been poured and the new plaza areas are starting to take form also. Wiring for new lighting has been installed, and the new staircase off of North Narberth Avenue is taking shape. New parking meter poles have been installed. Several new trees and shrubs have been installed. The parking area behind the stores on Haverford Avenue will remain closed until construction is completed.

Construction of the great wall continues. Mason's from R & C. Masonry under the direction of G. Antonini Construction Co and Pennoni Associates, Engineers have directed the construction of the retaining wall. Good weather continues to speed construction, with key elements close to completion. The retaining wall is completed, new stairs to the parking lot are being formed from the North Narberth Avenue sidewalk above Revivals Dress Shop. Trees and shrubs have been planted. and electric service to the parking area for new street lights have been installed. Sidewalks behind the stores are almost complete. The whole area will be graded prior to paving with blacktop.

Electrical construction of the lighting continues, but the major paving operation will await better weather. Pennoni Engineers will continue to monitor conditions in the parking area. Sign posts are being errected, and the fabrication of the railings and stairway access from Narberth Avenue are being fabricated off-site and will be installed on site when finished. New digital parking meters have been ordered and will be installed when received.
